On a recent visit to our friends’ home I was intrigued by their lavender vanilla air freshener spray. I don’t usually feel the need to add scents to my life but anything with essential oils is the exception. You all know I love making all things homemade, and this DIY linen spray is no different.
Lavender Vanilla DIY Linen Spray
- 6 Tablespoons filtered or distilled water
- 2 Tablespoons unflavored vodka (preferably non-GMO so that you’re not spraying potential toxins in your home)
- 1/4 teaspoon or 25 drops lavender essential oil (feel free to add more if you like)
- 1/2 tsp real vanilla extract
Directions: Pour all ingredients into a small glass spray bottle like this one. Shake well prior to each use. Use as an “air freshener” around the home and on linens. This is a perfect “sleepytime” relaxing scent. Feel free to make this recipe your own and add your favorite scents.
Research supports the idea that the scent of lavender can positively impact our emotional state and reduce anxiety. In this study, ambient odors of orange and lavender reduced anxiety and improved mood in patients waiting for dental treatment. I personally love diffusing lavender in my home (this is the best diffuser, in my opinion). I also find it very relaxing to spray my bedroom linens with this DIY linen spray before bed. Altogether, lavender is calming, cleansing and invigorating.
As we know, oil and water don’t mix. If you combine the essential oils with pure water they will just sit on top of the water in the jar and not incorporate. Vodka acts as a “carrier” for the oils, makes their scent last longer, and disperses the oil particles throughout the linen spray.
