I’ve been a fan of the Nutiva line for years and I’ve tried nearly all their products. I had the opportunity to review their products and although I don’t use each of these on a regular basis I appreciate Nutiva’s commitment to all organic, non-GMO, and clean ingredients. Here’s my review of Nutiva products…
Nutiva’s virgin coconut oil is certified organic, unrefined, cold-pressed and non-hydrogenated. It is made from fresh coconuts from Southeast Asia, where the coconut oil is processed immediately upon harvesting. In general, the more mild the flavor and smell of coconut oil the less heat that has been used to produce it. The more toasted and strong the flavor and smell, the more heat that has been used in production. Nutiva has a medium-strong toasted coconut smell and flavor.
My favorite thing about Nutiva’s red palm oil is that it is fair trade and organic. It is grown on small organic family farms in Ecuador and has a delicious, smooth and mild flavor. Palm oil plantations are linked to unsustainable deforestation and (in some regions) reduction of livable habitats for orangutans. What I love about Nutiva is that it partners with Natural Habitats™ to ensure that no deforestation or habitat destruction results from the growing or harvesting process.
I love real pastured butter and use it regularly, so I wouldn’t normally need a vegan “butter”. This product has an oilier texture in comparison to butter, and is also sweeter. What I appreciate about this butter alternative is that all the oils are completely non-GMO and organic. The ingredients: organic refined expeller-pressed coconut oil, organic vegan buttery flavor, organic unrefined red palm oil. What is organic vegan buttery flavor, you ask? Here’s what Nutiva has to say,
Our vegan buttery flavor in our Buttery Coconut Oil is made from pure certified organic non-GMO plants including sunflower, coconut, and mint. The buttery flavor does not contain any legumes, soy, corn, or corn derivatives. The product is free from peanut products, tree nuts, sesame seeds, dairy products, eggs, fish, shellfish, soy products, wheat, sulfites, and gluten. Our Buttery Coconut Oil also does not contain alliums (onions, garlic, leeks, chives, shallots).
I have 1 tablespoon of chia seeds every morning in my breakfast smoothie and I love that it’s packed with protein, omega-3s, and antioxidants. They also can be used as a thickener and egg replacement. Like all their high-quality products, these chia seeds are certified organic and non-GMO and unrefined. I love that chia seeds have:
- 15x more magnesium than broccoli
- 6x more calcium than whole milk
- 30% more antioxidants than blueberries
- 2x more potassium than bananas
I like a high protein breakfast and love that these hemp seeds are rich in protein and omega-3s. Just three tablespoons of hemp seeds contain a whopping 10 grams of protein – yay seeds! Non-GMO, organic, and gently cold-pressed, these hemp seeds are pure and nutritious.
I usually don’t rely on protein powders and prefer protein consumed with adequate saturated fat. As Sally Fallon explains in Nourishing Traditions,
Protein cannot be adequately utilized without dietary fats. That is why protein and fats occur together in eggs, milk, fish and meats. A high protein, low fat diet can cause many problems including too rapid growth and depletion of vitamin A and D reserves.
I do like that all the ingredients are organic, and it’s free from artificial flavors and colors, sweeteners, GMO ingredients, gluten, dairy, soy. It does contains corn syrup, so if you don’t eat corn, this product may not be for you.
Nutiva’s organic coconut sugar is made from fresh coconut tree sap, collected from the cut flower buds. The sap is heated to evaporate moisture, resulting in the crystal or granular form of sugar.
Coconut sugar is similar to brown sugar with a hint of caramel. I love that this sugar is unrefined and unprocessed and is much healthier than artificial sweeteners. It also may have a slower glycemic index than regular sugar.
I love coconut flour‘s sweet flavor and that it has a lower glycemic index than most traditional flours. Nutiva’s coconut flour is very fresh (vs. other brands I’ve tried that seem dried out and old) and rich in flavor.
This is Nutiva’s Nutella alternative. Although sugar is sugar is sugar, Nutiva’s product contains all non-GMO, organic ingredients which are much higher in quality.
Nutella ingredients: Sugar, vegetable oil, hazelnuts (13%), cocoa powder (7.4%), non-fat milk solids, emulsifier (soy lecithin), flavor (vanillin)
Nutiva’s Chocolate Hazelnut Spread ingredients: cane sugar*, palm olein*†, cocoa powder*, flax flour*, red palm oil*†, hazelnuts*, carob flour*, inulin*, coconut manna*, chia oil*, palm stearin*†, sunflower lecithin*, vanilla extract *organic † fair trade certified.
If you’re going to consume a hazelnut spread, at least steer clear from GMO and refined oils.
Coconut manna is delicious and healthy. It’s made from pure, dried and puréed fresh coconut flesh. Nutiva calls it an “everything spread” that can replace cream, cream cheese and butter. As with all their products, their Manna is organic and contains zero trans fats. Coconut Manna is very hard at room temperature and needs to be warmed up to soften it.
Have you tried any of these Nutiva products? What are you favorites and which would you like to try?
